    2013中考快速阅读训练: Computer Ghost
“I am so not wearing that!” Ellen shouted. It’s going to a Halloween party three days later, and she was never going to wear a pirate costume to the party. Pirate costume is just not her type. It is too boyish to her.
“But sweetie, you have to wear it. That’s the only type of costume that can keep you warm.” Ellen’s mum said softly.
“That’s so annoying!” Ellen shouted again. But she couldn’t say anything more. Otherwise, her mum was going to have a big talk with her just because she was being too moody.
The only thing she could do was to make a costume on her own. She always wanted to be a vampire at the Halloween party. They seem like the best costume. They are tight. They are cool and they are cute.
Ellen loves fashion, designing, but recently she got tired of designing costume, and her temper was kind of out of control. Ellen had no idea what happened to her. Maybe she was in puberty.
When Ellen was at school, she would turn in to a whole new person. She was modest. She was confident. She was pretty and she was nice. Ellen’s best friend Hailey always laughed at her because she seemed like a monster at home and a beauty at school.
Now, it was 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Ellen ran to her bedroom as fast as she could.
All she wanted is to lie on her bed and squeeze her pillow hard. But, strange things happened. The computer was logging in on its own!!!!!
Ellen didn’t scream. She was really brave. She sat next to the computer to see what was going on. But after one second, it logged off itself. Ellen felt something wrong with this computer, so she logged in. When she opened her computer desktop and there were some artistic pictures. After a few minutes, the mouse was out of control.
But now, Ellen was kind of scared. She quickly got her phone. She needed to call her BFF Hailey right away. Hailey was the only one who understood her and Hailey knew a lot about electronic things. Maybe she can help Ellen.
After a minute, Hailey came. When Hailey saw the computer desktop, she frowned.
“Could you get some water for me, please?” Hailey said quickly.
Ellen knew what Hailey actually meant was: she needed a quiet place to figure out what happened. She didn’t need anyone to explain what had happened.
    “Oh, MY GOSH!” Hailey yelled.
Ellen was frightened. She quickly opened her bedroom door and said, “Hailey, are you okay?”
“I’m fine. It was just a computer ghost.” Hailey replied.
    “What? A computer ghost?”
OK. Hailey has heard of ghost haunting an old house, ghost haunting a cemetery, but she never heard of ghost haunting a computer. Interesting!
“I know it sounded weird, but it was a computer ghost.”
    “How do you know?”
“Look!” Hailey pointed to a chat table.
“But why did you scream so loud?”
“Because it said it was going to ruin all the computers in the world!”
“Ok, can you tell me the whole story, please?”
    “Sure.”
“Computer ghost is a kind of computer virus,” Hailey pointed to the desktop. “It became alive because you didn’t shut down the computer for a long time. That computer virus was very new, and from now there were only four computers got stuck with it. But this computer ghost has a very high IQ. It can chat with people on the computer. I don’t know if he will be a good computer virus or not.”

I’m going to destroy all the computers in the world.
                  From: Computer ghost

“What?” Ellen felt kind of funny. How can a tiny computer virus destroy all the computers in the world? But still, she needs to take caution.
“Ellen, be serious. It’s a computer virus and it has a very high IQ.” Hailey frowned.

    Yes, be serious!!!
                           From: Computer ghost

    “He can hear?”
“Of course I can, and I can talk too.”
“Uh……..” Ellen and Hailey both screamed.
“Shush! I’m not scary, well maybe a little. Now back to the point, would you two destroy ATCITW, which means all the computers in the world”.
    “How? ”
    “Not telling.”
“Then we are not going to help.”
“If you want to help, just search who are the people that hate computers in the internet. I want every detail of them.”
“Hello? We are just two 13-year-old girls. We are not computer hackers. How could we search every detail of them? And it’s probably illegal.”
“I’m pretty sure one of you is a computer hacker. Bye.”
“But …” Ellen stood there. Did he just say that one of them was a computer hacker? Ellen was pretty sure she was not a computer hacker. So that means Hailey was!! She started staring at Hailey.
    “What?” Hailey yelled.
“You’ve never told me you are a computer hacker.” Ellen said it surprisingly.
“I’m not. OK, fine. I am.” Hailey said it with a relief.
    Ellen still couldn’t believe it.
    “Why didn’t you tell me?”
    “I don’t know, just didn’t feel right.”
    “But I’m your BFF!”
    “I know.”
After a few minutes of silence, Hailey’s mum called. Hailey had to go home and had her dinner. The girls decided not to tell anyone about what happened that day.
In the evening, Ellen had a nightmare. She dreamed that she was in a fire. Everyone was yelling at her to come out, but she couldn’t move her feet. She was just watching all the fire become bigger and bigger. Then, she woke up in the morning. It was 7:20 already.
Ellen dressed quickly, pairing her dark red jeans with a black tee and a tank top decorated with cherries. She had to do it really fast because she was catching the train that day.
Ellen had science in the morning. She was hoping it would finish soon, so she could talk about the job the computer ghost gave her and Hailey at lunch time.
    Finally, science was over.
“I don’t think that computer ghost is a real computer virus,” Hailey whispered secretly to Ellen.
“How do you know?” Ellen whispered back.
“I’ll tell you when we are in the cafeteria, because people will think we are talking behind their backs if we keep whispering to each other.” Hailey said it in a normal voice.
Now there were lots of questions in Ellen’s head. How did Hailey figure it out?
“How do you know?” Ellen repeated again.
“Ok, so I didn’t really trust him when he gave us the job.” Hailey drank a mouthful of juice, then said, “So I searched: Can a computer virus talk and hear? and the answer is no. So I’m afraid that computer ghost is a computer hacker. But I don’t know why he wants us to help him destroy ACTITW.”
Ok, Ellen had to be humble. She didn’t even know her BFF was so smart. She thought her head was just full of cute boys. But Ellen couldn’t tell Hailey that she thought her head was just full of cute boys. It would just hurt her feelings.
“How can the computer hacker hear our conversation, and how can he speak?” Ellen wondered.
“He’s probably spying on your computer,” Hailey replied.
Ellen thought she would have to be careful if the computer hacker can hear every single word she said when she was in her room.
After school, Hailey told Ellen not to tell the computer ghost about their real name. So:
Ellen - Lily, Hailey - Hannah
When Ellen and Hailey arrived at Ellen’s bedroom, the computer logged by itself again. Then, a voice called out:
    “Where were you guys today?”
“We went shopping.” Ellen answered. Then, Hailey gave her a little nod.
“Whatever, have you guys finished the job I gave you yesterday?”
“No, we will finish it tomorrow.” Hailey replied.
“So, what are you names?” Computer ghost asked.
“My name is Lily and her name is….is….”
    “Hannah,” Hailey quickly added.
“You guys can call me Bob, even though I’m a computer ghost.”
That’s the most boring name Ellen ever heard. It’s probably a fake name too. She looked at Hailey, and Hailey gave her another nod.
“Listen Bob, we have lots of work to do. Can you just give us an hour please?” Hailey lied. They actually didn’t have any work to do. She just needed to discuss what to do next.
“This better not be a trick, because, I got my eyes on you!” Bob said.
    “Sure.” Hailey answered.
“Ok, what shall we do?” Ellen asked nervously when they left Ellen’s room.
“I have a plan,” Hailey said with a little smile. “We can make some names and details up. I’ll try to find out Bob’s real name and where he lives, so we can call the police.”
“Call the police? Why?” Ellen asked curiously.
“Don’t you think searching people’s details is illegal? Oh!” Hailey laughed.
    “You’re so smart!” Ellen cheered.
But finding out where Bob lived and what his real name wasn’t that easy, but Hailey tried her best, and Ellen helped, too.
However, it didn’t go so well.
Three days later, “Aren’t we supposed go to Emma’s house and do our work with her?” Ellen asked.
“Right, I almost forgot.” Hailey replied.
When they were at Emma’s house, they saw Emma’s Dad, his was very nice and kind.
    “Finally! I finished!!!” Hailey yelled.
“You’re so fast, maybe you can play on more computers.” Emma suggested.
“But your Dad is using it.” Hailey said, sounding worried.
“Don’t worry. I will tell him to get off.” Emma said.
When Emma and Hailey came to the computer, Hailey saw something like a chat table on the desk top. She felt something was wrong.
“Don’t close it.” Hailey said when Emma was about to close the chat table.
    “Why?” Emma said.
“That’s probably you Dads stuff, you shouldn’t close it, you know.” Hailey explained.
“Ok, then you can go on the internet yourself.” Emma said. The she walked away.
Hailey quickly open the chat table.
Oh, my gosh! Emma’s Dad was the Computer Ghost!!!
She quickly ran and got Ellen, and told her what had happened.
When she was about to call the police, Ellen told her to stop.
Ellen thought maybe they should talk to Emma first.
When they told Emma the whole story, Emma agreed that they should call the police.
    So they did.
After a few minute, the police came.
“You can’t handcuff me. I did nothing!!!” Emma’s Dad yelled.
“You’re sure you did nothing? You are a computer hacker. You have forced lots of people to search other people’s personal things.” Hailey said it loudly.
“Remember Lily and Hannah? That’s me and Hailey! I know you wouldn’t believe me.” Ellen added.
“Dad, why you want to destroy ATCITW?” Emma asked.
    “What’s ATCITW?” the police asked.
“It’s ‘All the Computers in the World’,” Ellen replied.
“You don’t even understand! Emma, do you know why your brother died? Because he watched the computer too much! And he’s only fifteen! I have to have my revenge!!!” Emma’s Dad yelled again.
“He’s distracted.” Police said to the girls.
“I’m pretty sure the law will give you the right answer.” Hailey said. (责任编辑:admin)
